Tahlonteeskee

On our first trip out to Oklahoma to view our property, my sister in law and myself ventured out to Tahlonteeskee. So named for Chief Tahlonteeskee who presided over the Cherokee Nation from 1809 to 1818. It now houses the Cherokee Museum, which I recommend checking out. The reconstructed site sits just outside of Gore, Oklahoma on US 64. The Tahlonteeskee settlement was established in 1827 and served as the seat of Cherokee government from 1829-1839 in Indian Territory after the western Cherokee were forced to relocate from the Arkansas Territory. It the oldest capital in Oklahoma and remained a meeting place for some time for Old Settlers and the new factions of the tribe, who would settle their grievances there.
