Things

There is a form of photography called HDR or High Dynamic Range photography. Sometimes when there is a large range from light to dark sections in the picture you want to take, you’ll either need to use a filter of some sort…i.e., a Graduated Neutral Density Filter or a Polarizing Filter to attempt to equalize the contrasts in the image or live with the results you get with a straight shot. However, there is another way to record the range of lights and darks and this is by taking 3-7 or more shots of the exact same scene, varying the exposure from very dark to very light. Then taking all the images and combining them in a software program such as Nik’s HDR EFEX Pro. (There are others but this is the one I personally prefer.) Once combined, you can adjust saturation and brightness, etc and you get an image like the Old Dozer in my Things category. I love HDR, but not heavily processed HDR, which to me appears a bit like a cartoon image. Nor do I think HDR is the answer for every subject, but for certain images, I feel it can make the difference between a nice image and one that evokes the viewer into saying “WOW”.
